Recipe for Success

Everybody likes a good recipe, good recipes make for some good food...  Good food satisfies our physical hunger and gives us the strength and energy we need to accomplish those things we need to accomplish.  I know that you each have goals, we have talked about them.  You have made a goal this semester to achieve a certain grade.  Look at the Recipe 4 Success .  This recipe will help you gain the strength and energy you need to accomplish your goal.  All you need is PURPOSE, PERFORMANCE and PREPARATION.

YOU DO THE MATH

"There is a difference between
 not knowing
and not knowing yet."     Shelia Tobias

Many students say that they "hate math".  What I have discovered is that, it is not the math that they hate, it is the not knowing how to do the math.  One of my professors used to say, "There is a method to this madness."  That quote is so true.  Hang in there everyone as we discover the method to this madness called math.  We will conquer the order of operations, devour the distributive property and be well on our way to evaluate expressions and equations.  Doing the math and maybe even loving it...LOL

Rules of the Road

Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics.—Dean Schlicter

One of my students asked me a fabulous question this past week.  He asked, “How do you know what to do and what not to do in math?”  I was so excited because this is the same student that said that he did not like math ...  I told him that we would not only discover the answer to that question as we look at the history of math, but that we would also look more at the “Rules of the Road” for math.  What are they called?  Properties and Order of Operations???  Any of that sound familiar?  Using these will help us all end up at the same destination even though we worked independently. Math is not just something we do, math was designed to explain/describe how our world works and to discover new ways of doing things.

Get ready for a great adventure as we discover the why’s and how’s and answer the what if’s…

Let's Flip the Script

Parents and students I am sooooooo excited.  Our classes will be flipping the script of traditional education/learning.  We will be turning our classes upside down?!?!? Yes, 7-10 minute video lesson presentations or powerpoints posted on vikingxfactor and viewed at home ... and discussions/debates, homework/practice, performance/authentic assessments/projects at school.

For more information on Flipped Classrooms please see:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9VcdHybIWKRbGlDUTg0Z2NLdGs/edit

or as always email me or call me to discuss.

Why?
- To promote student independent learning
- To promote student responsibility
- To allow students to use tools that they already have and like to use, to now use for education.
- To increase the level of mastery of material
- and the list goes on and on for the benefits.

What's Needed?
A Computer, Tablet, Smart Phone, or access to the public library for computer usage.  We will practice the flipped classroom in the classroom so that students will know all that is required of them.

Parents if computer usage is not possible at home please let me know.

Now let's FLIP the Script!

I am soooooo excited to have you in my class!  Each one of you will help to make our learning community diverse and strong.

Math turns IDEAS into REALITY!!! And helps us to understand why and how our world works.

This year we will use what you already know and build upon it to find the... xfactor!
